According to the World of work self-awareness podcast, Self-awareness is “to be conscious of our true unfiltered selves.”
It is a state in which individuals possess an understanding of themselves, comprehending their thoughts, actions, attitudes, behaviors, character, and the underlying reasons behind their actions, behavior, and thought patterns.
Self-awareness involves engaging in introspective thinking and self-reflection. It entails a journey inward, an exploration of one’s inner self to uncover the essence of who they are and why they act and think as they do.
Over the years, I grappled with a lack of self-awareness, often finding myself puzzled by my actions, reasoning, and behaviors. Understanding my true self and purpose remained elusive, and my life felt like a series of random occurrences without clear direction.
I struggled to take full responsibility for the outcomes in my life, as my contributions felt minimal. My journey lacked deliberate, well-informed, and calculated decisions aimed at a specific life objective, and instead, it seemed driven by unexpected life events.
Below listed methods facilitated the development of my self-awareness.
You can also incorporate the methods to enhance your self-awareness, as explained below:
Feedback – Seek honest feedback from family members, classmates, friends, and colleagues at work to gain insights into how you are perceived by others. The Johari window is an invaluable tool for this activity. It is a resource for enhancing self-awareness by soliciting feedback from your interactions, colleagues, and friends.
Self-reflection – Dedicate time to introspect on your emotions, contemplate various phases of your life journey, and assess how these experiences have shaped who you are today and your aspirations for the future. You can accomplish this by practicing meditation, maintaining a journal, and crafting a personal vision.
Personality and Values Assessments – Engage in personality type questionnaires and evaluations of personal values. These include Personality type test. These resources are available on online platforms.
Learning from others to enhance self-awareness – Observe and study the behavior of others as a means to develop your own self-awareness.
Life Experiences – Expanding your range of life experiences is a means to foster self-awareness. Explore new locations, engage in challenging projects, and delve into a diverse range of subjects through your reading.
Exploring New Opportunities and Embracing Challenges— Attend events, take in additional challenging tasks, Network, Volunteer.
Incorporating the six methods required a conscious effort on my part to enhance my self-awareness. These methods have yielded remarkable results for me. I am confident that our clients will share a similar experience after participating in our life coaching programs which aims to guide them on a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness.
Through this process, people can sift through their attitudes and behaviors, making conscious decisions to nurture and reinforce positive traits while actively working on managing and transforming negative ones.
We would argue that over time, there has been a decline in people’s levels of self-awareness. As Stephen Covey points out in his book, ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,’ we currently reside in an era marked by heightened social image consciousness.’
The prevalence of social media has significantly impacted our capacity to truly understand ourselves. We often find ourselves mimicking popular figures, striving to replicate the carefully crafted personas they present publicly. In doing so, we tend to forget that what we witness on social media is often a curated and edited version of reality, far removed from genuine authenticity.
As time passes, we gradually diminish our genuine selves in the pursuit of emulating contrived public personas labeled as “perfect characters.” In doing so, we inadvertently neglect our true, authentic identities, often unaware that we can never unlock our full potential in life by mimicking the seemingly flawless personas presented on social media.
The path to realizing our true potential lies in embracing our authentic selves, complete with our imperfections, and actively striving to enhance and evolve our own unique qualities. In essence, it’s about cultivating a profound sense of “Self-Awareness.”
